Revelation 14 Explained: The 144,000, the Harvest, and the Winepress
... for the harvest of the earth is ripe.

Revelation 14 reveals the final separation of humanity through a series of harvest images: the 144,000 appear as firstfruits to God, the Son of Man gathers the faithful in the harvest of the earth, and the followers of the Beast are crushed in the winepress of divine judgment.
Revelation 13 introduced the mark of the Beast, but the following chapter reveals the contrasting identity of those who belong to God. Revelation 14:1 describes the followers of the Lamb with the name of God written on their foreheads. Just as the Beast marks his followers, God seals His own people with His name. Humanity is therefore divided between two allegiances: those who worship the Lamb and bear His name, and those who worship the Beast and receive his mark.
Revelation 14 also presents the outcome of the conflict introduced in Revelation 13. The followers of the Beast receive his mark and worship his image, but those who belong to the Lamb are marked with the name of God. The chapter unfolds through a sequence of harvest imagery. First, the 144,000 appear with the Lamb as firstfruits to God. Next, the gospel is proclaimed to the entire world as a final warning before judgment. The chapter then shows the harvest of the faithful, followed by the winepress of God’s wrath. These scenes reveal the final separation between those who belong to the Lamb and those who follow the Beast.
Structure of Revelation 14
-
The 144,000 appear with the Lamb as firstfruits (14:1–5)
-
Angels proclaim the final gospel warning (14:6–13)
-
The Son of Man gathers the harvest of the faithful (14:14–16)
-
The grapes are gathered in the winepress of God’s wrath (14:17–20)
THE MEANING OF FIRSTFRUITS IN SCRIPTURE
Firstfruits in the Law of Moses
In Scripture, firstfruits always carry three meanings:
-
they belong to God,
-
they are the first portion of a harvest, and
-
they signal that a greater harvest is coming.
The concept of firstfruits originates in the agricultural laws given to Israel. In Leviticus, the LORD commanded that when Israel entered the land and began harvesting crops, the first portion of the harvest was to be presented before Him:
“When you enter the land I am going to give you and you reap its harvest, bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest.” - Leviticus 23:10
This offering was known in Hebrew as bikkurim, meaning the first or earliest produce of the harvest. The firstfruits were dedicated to God before the rest of the crops could be gathered or consumed. In doing so, Israel acknowledged that the harvest belonged to the Lord and that He was the one who provided it.
Under the Law, firstfruits were not ordinary crops. They were holy and dedicated to the Lord.
“Bring the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest.” - Leviticus 23:10
The offering also carried a prophetic meaning. The firstfruits were not the entire harvest, but the first portion that signaled a much larger harvest to come. In this way the firstfruits functioned as both a dedication to God and a promise of the coming harvest.
The biblical idea of firstfruits therefore includes three key elements:
-
Dedication — the first portion belongs to God at the Temple.
-
Ownership — the harvest is recognized as coming from the Lord.
-
Promise — the firstfruits guarantee that the rest of the harvest will follow.
This agricultural imagery became a powerful theological picture used throughout Scripture to describe God’s work of redemption.
Jesus Christ as the Firstfruits of the Resurrection
The New Testament applies the same concept to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Paul writes:
“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” - 1 Corinthians 15:20
Just as the first sheaf of grain signaled the coming harvest, Christ’s resurrection is the first event in the resurrection harvest of believers. Paul explains the sequence clearly:
“But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.” - 1 Corinthians 15:23
Christ’s resurrection therefore fulfills the pattern established in the Law. His resurrection is the first portion of the final resurrection harvest that will be completed when all who belong to Him are raised.
HARVEST OF THE FIRSTFRUITS - 144,000
When Revelation describes the 144,000 as “firstfruits to God and the Lamb” (Revelation 14:4), it draws directly from this biblical imagery. The term suggests that the 144,000 represent a dedicated first portion of a larger harvest of redeemed people during the Tribulation.
Earlier in Revelation, these individuals are sealed by God and sent out from the tribes of Israel (Revelation 7:1–8). By the time Revelation 14 opens, they appear with the Lamb on Mount Zion and sing a new song before the throne. Their presence before God indicates that their earthly mission has been completed and that they now stand as a consecrated offering belonging to Him.
There is no set time frame for their ministry, but this reference has an indication of their location prior to the seventh trumpet sounding.
Revelation 14:1 "Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads."
-
"the Lamb" - Jesus, the Messiah, in the heavenly tabernacle of the 3rd Heaven.
-
"standing on Mount Zion" - Mount Zion here likely refers to the heavenly Zion, not the one on earth
-
Hebrews 12:22 "But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,"
-
-
"with him 144,000" - they are no longer on earth, but in the 3rd heaven with the Lamb. Their mission is complete and they stand with the Lamb, but were either killed during the Great Tribulation and their souls/spirit are before the Throne or they were "harvested" or called up in a like manner of the Two Witnesses.
-
"written on their foreheads" - Similar to the high priest.
-
Exodus 28:36–38 "36 “Make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as on a seal: HOLY TO THE LORD. 37 Fasten a blue cord to it to attach it to the turban; it is to be on the front of the turban. 38 It will be on Aaron’s forehead, and he will bear the guilt involved in the sacred gifts the Israelites consecrate, whatever their gifts may be. It will be on Aaron’s forehead continually so that they will be acceptable to the Lord."
-
Revelation 14:2 "And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps."
-
"a sound from heaven" - another clue that the 144,000 are in the 3rd Heaven
-
Psalm 29:3-4 "3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic."
-
Ezekiel 43:2 "and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory."
-
-
"playing their harps" - not a normal sound coming from heaven, but on earth, typically used by King David accompanying songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.
-
Psalm 33:2 "Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre."
-
1 Chronicles 15:16 "David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals."
-
1 Chronicles 25:1-3 "1 David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service: 2 From the sons of Asaph: Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision. 3 As for Jeduthun, from his sons: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp in thanking and praising the Lord."
-
Revelation 14:3 "And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been purchased from the earth.
-
"before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders" another clue that the 144,000 were in the 3rd Heaven.
-
"No one could learn the song except the 144,000" - another clue that the 144,000 were in the 3rd Heaven.
-
"purchased from the earth" - another clue that the 144,000 were in the 3rd Heaven as they are not on earth.
-
PURCHASED = Greek "ēgorasmenoi" from "agorazó" means "purchased or bought" The word emphasizes ownership secured through payment, rather than the act of liberation itself. Throughout the New Testament this purchase is accomplished through the blood of Christ (Revelation 5:9; 1 Corinthians 6:20). By describing the 144,000 as “purchased from the earth,” Revelation highlights that they belong to God as His possession and are presented as firstfruits dedicated to Him.
-
Strong tie to connection with Tribe of Levi, who were consecrated to God in lieu of the firstborn.
-
Numbers 3:12 "I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine"
-
-
Along with the Two Witnesses, they may be among the first groups martyred by the Anti-Christ.
-
Mark 13:9 "You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them."
-
-
With regards to Israel, the Lord Almighty gave the land and the people over to captivity, but will purchase and restore Israel in the future.
-
Jeremiah 32:42-44 "42 “This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them. 43 Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’ 44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, because I will restore their fortunes, declares the Lord.”
-
-
With regard to all things that have been "purchased" by the blood of the Lamb:
-
Matthew 13:44-46 "44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it."
-
Hebrews 2:5-9 "5 It is not to angels that he [God] has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7 You made them [humanity] a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.” In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them [Genesis 1:26-30]. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels [as a human] for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone."
-
1 Corinthians 15:25-28 "25 For he [Jesus] must reign [the Millennium] until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. 28 When he [God] has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all."
-
Ephesians 1:22-23 "22 And God placed all things under his [Jesus] feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way."
-
Revelation 5:9 "And they [4 living creatures and 24 elders] sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation."

-
REDEEMED (NOT USED HERE) = Greek "apolutrōsin" from "apolutrósis", a compound of "apo" meaning "off or separation" and "lutron" meaning "paying a ransom price"; in other words, "to repurchase what was lost". It highlights a different aspect of the same salvation. If "purchase" is ownership secured by Christ’s blood then "redemption" is freedom from sin secured by Christ’s blood.
-
Revelation 14:4-5 "4 These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. 5 No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless."
-
"follow the Lamb" - new covenant, not the old covenant.
-
Luke 22:20 "In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."
-
Romans 8:9-11 "9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you."
-
Hebrews 12:24 "to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel."
-
-
"offered as firstfruits" - the firstfruits (Hebrew "bikkurim" means “promise to come") were a sacrifice, and an indication of obedience and reverence. No other crops could be harvested until the firstfruits were brought to the priests. This may be an indication that they were killed as they evangelized their fellow Jews. Those who try to take God's firstfruits will be destroyed. Calling them firstfruits suggests that their gathering precedes a larger harvest that will follow later in the chapter.
-
Fruits are harvested or gathered from hard work
-
Deuteronomy 26:1-2 "1 When you have entered the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, 2 take some of the firstfruits of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you..."
-
-
Sacred to God as his possession
-
Jeremiah 2:2-3 "... ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown. 3 Israel was holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,' declares the Lord."
-
-
The best and first of the harvest
-

Proverbs 3:9 "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops"
-
Ezekiel 44:30 "The best of all the firstfruits and of all your special gifts will belong to the priests. You are to give them the first portion of your ground meal so that a blessing may rest on your household."
-
-
It is an indication of the rest of the harvest
-

-
James 1:18 "He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created."
-
1 Corinthians 15:23 "But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him."

THE FINAL GOSPEL CALL

This is the time prior to the sounding of the seventh trumpet near the end of the Great Tribulation period referenced in Revelation 10:7. These are the last calls to repent heard worldwide in God grace and mercy to a rebellious world. Calls for wisdom and warning to the hardening of their hearts to redemption through Jesus the Messiah.
Revelation 14:6-7 "6 Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. 7 He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
-
With the departure of the 144,000, this is the last evangelistic message. Human effort could not get the Gospel out as effectively and a response is required.
-
Matthew 24:14 "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."
-
Mark 13:10 "And the gospel must first be preached to all nations."
-
1 Corinthians 8:6 "yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live."
-
Revelation 14:8 "8 A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’ which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”
-
"Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great"
-
Prophetic warning that comes true in Revelation 18
-
Isaiah 21:9 "Look, here comes a man in a chariot with a team of horses. And he gives back the answer: ‘Babylon has fallen, has fallen! All the images of its gods lie shattered on the ground!’”
-
-
"All the nations" - the nations aligned with Babylon
-
Isaiah 51:22 "This is what your Sovereign Lord says, your God, who defends his people: “See, I have taken out of your hand the cup that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again."
-
-
"Drink the maddening wine"
-
Psalm 75:8 "In the hand of the Lord is a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to its very dregs."
-
Isaiah 51:17 "Awake, awake! Rise up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath, you who have drained to its dregs the goblet that makes people stagger."
-
Revelation 14:9-11"9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”
-
"will be tormented" - asks to look toward the future, not current state, which will be worse without repentance.
-
Ezekiel 18:23 "Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?"
-
2 Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."
-
Revelation 14:12-13 "12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus. 13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”
-
"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord" - I believe this statement has its context within verses 6-12. When taken or applied together, they reflect revelation that evil will be judged and those who receive the mark of the beast will enter into the same judgment. Revelation 22:7 states "Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book." In this case, there is a blessing for those who decide the fear God, who reject the bastion of evil called Babylon the Great and who do not receive the mark of the beast, for when they die, they will be with the Lord.
-
"from now on" - I believe the blessing starts at the time a person reads and hears what the previous verses and applies it to their life. I do not believe that it just refers to a time during the Tribulation period, but for those who read and apply at that time, it will. There is nothing different about dying in faithfulness to the Lord now versus the Tribulation notwithstanding the tremendous persecution and suffering that will occur during that time.
THE GRAIN HARVEST - GATHERING OF THE FAITHFUL
This appears to include Tribulation Saints.
Revelation 14:14 "I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand."
-
"crown of gold" - not a crown of thorns in salvation, but gold in dominion and authority.
-
Psalm 21:1-3 "1 The king rejoices in your strength, Lord. How great is his joy in the victories you give! 2 You have granted him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. 3 You came to greet him with rich blessings and placed a crown of pure gold on his head."
-
-
"son of man" - Jesus is harvesting, not his angel(s); likely represents the gathering of the remaining faithful during the Tribulation.
-
Daniel 7:13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence."
-
Revelation 14:15 "Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.”
-
"harvest" - Grain harvest often represents the gathering of God’s people. Grain is gathered and preserved.
-
Deuteronomy 16:9 "Count off seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain."
-
Matthew 13:27-30 "27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ 28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ 29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”
-
John 4:35 "Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest."
-
Galatians 6:7-9 "7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
-
Revelation 14:16 "So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested."
-
Matthew 24:30-31 "30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other."
-
Mark 13:26-27 "26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens."
-
Luke 21:27-28 "27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
THE GRAPE HARVEST - THE WINEPRESS OF WRATH

The Hebrews were deeply rooted in the processing and consumption of wine. Noah created a vineyard after the Flood Event and became drunk on its wine (Genesis 9:20).
Revelation 14:17-18 "17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.”
-
"fire" - a symbol of God's holy presence
-
Exodus 3:2-5 " 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” 4 When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” 5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
-
Deuteronomy 4:24 "For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God."
-
Hebrews 12:28-28 "28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”
-
-
"angel, who had charge of the fire" - same angel who had the golden censer and hurled the fire at the earth to begin the seven trumpets.
-
Revelation 8:3-5 "3 Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. 4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake."
-
-
"sickle" - a symbol of divine judgment and reckoning.
-
Joel 3:13 "Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full and the vats overflow—so great is their wickedness!”
-
Jeremiah 50:16 "Cut off from Babylon the sower, and the reaper with his sickle at harvest. Because of the sword of the oppressor let everyone return to their own people, let everyone flee to their own land."
-
Jeremiah 51:33 "33 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Daughter Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time it is trampled; the time to harvest her will soon come.”
-
-
"the earth’s vine"
- The earth is the world; the flesh; those who have the mark of the beast at the end of the 42 months of the Great Tribulation. This vine had branches [wicked people] that produced bad fruit that resulted in death.
- Psalm 1:1-3 "1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers."
- Proverbs 6:16-19 "16 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes [exalt oneself above others], a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community."
- Isaiah 24:5-6 "5 The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left."
- Matthew 7:15-20 "15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn-bushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them."
- Matthew 12:33-37 "33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
- John 3:31 "The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all."
- Galatians 5:19-23 "19 The acts [fruit] of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
- 2 Corinthians 4:4 "The god of this age [Satan] has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."
- This is the opposite to the vine of Jesus Christ; the things of the 3rd Heaven; the Spirit

John 15:1-8 "1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."

- The earth is the world; the flesh; those who have the mark of the beast at the end of the 42 months of the Great Tribulation. This vine had branches [wicked people] that produced bad fruit that resulted in death.
-
"cluster of grapes" - symbol of potential blessings from God, but unlike grain, this imagery of grapes are crushed; these people reject God and his blessings. This grape harvest is symbolic for judgment.

Numbers 13:17-27 "17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan, he said, “Go up through the Negev and on into the hill country. 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.) 21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo Hamath. 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land. 26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit."

-
"its grapes are ripe" - Greek "ēkmasan" means "to be at the prime, fully ripe"; God have give them plenty of time to mature.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 "9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness."

2 Peter 3:8-9 "8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Revelation 14:19 "The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath. "
-
"the angel" - unlike the previous harvest, this is not Jesus, but an angel.
-
"great winepress" - symbolic of crushing judgment on a large scale.
-
Joel 3:13 "Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full
and the vats overflow—so great is their wickedness!” -
Revelation 14:9-11 "9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”
-
Revelation 14:20 "They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia."
-
"outside the city" - The judgment occurs outside the city, echoing Old Testament prophecies where the enemies of God gather around Jerusalem and are destroyed; the battlefield of Armageddon (Isaiah 63, Joel 3, Zechariah 14)
-
"blood" - instead of wine being produced to bring sustenance and joy to the drinker, blood overflows meaning judgment and physical death. The blood is poured out as during the sacrificial system, but in this case, God rejects the blood of wicked people who do not meet the standard of righteousness and atonement for sin. Only the blood of Jesus Christ is acceptable. No quantity of blood have the redemptive power of the singular sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
Through these three harvest scenes Revelation 14 reveals the final separation of humanity. Those who belong to the Lamb are gathered into God’s harvest, while those who follow the Beast face the judgment of the winepress.
