The Anti-Christ Revealed

... and they also worshiped the beast

the beast.webp

The Anti-Christ in Revelation 13 is presented as a satanic counterfeit of Christ—rising from the nations, empowered by the dragon (Satan), speaking blasphemies, and demanding global worship. Scripture distinguishes between the present “spirit of antichrist” and a future embodied ruler who exalts himself above God. He will be the forward-facing political leader, but Revelation frames the conflict not merely as political, but as a crisis of worship, allegiance, and identity—whose name is honored and whose mark is borne.

Anti-Christ in Scripture (Quick Definition)

In the New Testament, “antichrist” refers both to:

  1. The present spirit of deception that denies Jesus as the Christ (1 John 2:18; 4:3), and

  2. The final embodied ruler who exalts himself above God and demands worship (2 Thessalonians 2:3–4; Revelation 13).

The Beast of Revelation 13 represents the final manifestation of this reality.

WHAT DOES ANTI-CHRIST MEAN?

Greek "antichristou" or "pseudochristos"

  • "anti" means "the opposite, in place of or the opponent of"; "christos" means "the Messiah".

  • "pseudo" means "deceitful, wicked, false, liar"

Knowledge of this comes by understanding:

  1. its perspective regard Jesus Christ,

  2. there have been many types over human history, and

  3. it will have a final manifestation.

THE SPIRIT OF ANTI-CHRIST

That which denies Jesus Christ as the Messiah (including religion):

  • 1 John 2:22-27 "22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life. 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him."

  • 2 John 1:7 "I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist."

To deny Jesus Christ [the "Son of God" and the "Word"] is to deny the Holy Bible [Word of God].

  • Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who keeps the law [scripture]."

  • John 1:1-14 "1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

TYPES OF ANTI-CHRIST

People who persuade others in the spirit of the anti-christ but have no power as evidence that they are the Messiah:

  • Matthew 24:4-5, 23-24 "4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many... 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect."

  • 1 John 4:1-6 "1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. 4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood."

  • 1 John 2:18-21 "18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth."

  • Revelation 17:8 "The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and yet will come up out of the Abyss and go to its destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because it once was, now is not, and yet will come.

    • "once was, now is not, and yet will come"

      • this could refer to Antiochus Epiphanies, who was a type of anti-christ that modeled the final Anti-Christ to come.

        • Daniel 11:31-32 "31 “His armed forces [Antiochus Epiphanies IV in 168 BC] will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation [statue of Zeus with Antiochus' face on it]. 32 With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him."

      • this could also refer to the false resurrection

        • Revelation 13:3 "One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast."

THE FUTURE MANIFESTATION

This future person who is currently restrained (commonly understood to be the Holy Spirit’s restraining influence) until the appointed time, will wear the title "The Anti-Christ" coming in peace by deception, will be given power by Satan to perform many great signs and wonders, will rebel and blaspheme against God the Father and will force all people to worship him as a god during the Tribulation Period:

  • He brings false peace and stability

    • Zechariah 11:15-17 "15 Then the Lord said to me, “Take again the equipment of a foolish shepherd. 16 For I am going to raise up a shepherd over the land who will not care for the lost, or seek the young, or heal the injured, or feed the healthy, but will eat the meat of the choice sheep, tearing off their hooves. 17 “Woe to the worthless shepherd, who deserts the flock! May the sword strike his arm and his right eye! May his arm be completely withered, his right eye totally blinded!”

    • 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8 "3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God [the spirit of the antichrist]. 5 Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6 And now you know what is holding him back [the Holy Spirit], so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth [Revelation 19:15] and destroy by the splendor of his coming."

    • Revelation 6:2 "I looked, and there before me was a white horse [false peace - imitation of Jesus in Revelation 19:11]! Its rider held a bow [symbol of war], and he was given [by the Red Dragon] a crown ["stephanos" meaning victory award], and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest [in appearance only].

  • This will be a man who will lead a confederation of 10 kings in the image of a second Roman Republic that he will eventually control.
    • Daniel 2:33, 41-43 "33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. ... 41 Just as you saw that the feet and [10] toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron [Rome], so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the [10] toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay."

    • Daniel 7:7-8, 19-26 "7 “After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns. 8 “While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being and a mouth that spoke boastfully ... 19 “Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully. 21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom. 23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time [3.5 years]

  • Some believe that there will be a Gentile confederacy that will enter into a covenant with Israel and other nations for seven years, but break the covenant halfway through.

    • Daniel 9:26-27 "26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. He [the Anti-Christ] will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him."

      • confirm a covenant - Imitation of peace in Ezekiel 37:26 (see Covenant Compromise)

      • one seven - seven years

      • in the middle of the sevens - 3.5 years or midpoint of the Tribulation will be the start of the Great Tribulation.

      • end of sacrifice and offering - alludes to restoration of OT mechanism for atonement of sin

      • at the temple - the 3rd Temple will be built

      • abomination that causes desolation - Anti-Christ will set up a statue of himself in the Temple for people to worship him.

        • Daniel 12:11-12 "11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days."

        • Matthew 24:15 "So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand—"

        • 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 "3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day [the day of the Lord] will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God."

        • This is not only for the Jews; the Anti-Christ seeks to stop all true Gentile worship of God the Father.

      • until the end - Battle of Armageddon

  • He will set himself up as ruler of the entire world; He is the "willful king".

    • Daniel 11:36-45 "36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed (Revelation 15:1), for what has been determined must take place. 37 He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. 38 Instead of them, he will honor a god of fortresses; a god unknown to his ancestors he will honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will distribute the land at a price. 40 “At the time of the end the king of the South will engage him in battle, and the king of the North will storm out against him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood. 41 He will also invade the Beautiful Land. Many countries will fall, but Edom, Moab and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand. 42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt, with the Libyans and Cushites in submission. 44 But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. 45 He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at the beautiful holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

      • "king" - It will be a man, who will deceitfully lead a grand rebellion with the purpose of destroying the Jews and proclaiming himself the most high.

        • "little horn" - Daniel 7:8 "“While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it..."

        • Daniel 8:23-25 "23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise. 24 He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy those who are mighty, the holy people. 25 He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.

        • Daniel 9:26 "...The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed."

        • 2 Thessalonians 2:3 "... for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed..."

      • "say unheard-of things against the God of gods" - he is a blasphemer

        • Daniel 7:11 "Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking..."

        • Daniel 7:25 "He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws..."

      • until the time of wrath is completed - God has ordained suffering for a limited time

        • Daniel 7:25 "... The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time [3.5 yrs]."

      • verse 37 — “the desire of women” (Hebrew: chemdat nashim)

        • This phrase is debated. Some interpret it as rejecting ordinary human attachments (including marriage/sexual desire), others as rejecting what women commonly treasure, and others as rejecting a revered object of devotion associated with women. In context, however, the controlling emphasis is not his sexuality but his total self-exaltation: he shows regard for neither the “gods of his fathers” nor any rival devotion—“nor will he regard any god”—because he “will exalt himself above them all” (Daniel 11:37).

        • Israel’s history shows how foreign worship sometimes entered through alliances and intermarriage (Numbers 25:1–3; Judges 3:6; 1 Kings 11:1–8; Ezra 9–10; Nehemiah 13), which supports reading Daniel 11:37 as rejecting even culturally powerful religious attachments—yet the main thrust remains his claim to ultimate worship. For an extended argument along these lines, see desire of women link.

THE BEAST OUT OF THE SEA

Verse 1 - Revelation 13:1 "The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name."

  • "dragon" - Satan (see The Red Dragon)

  • "shore of the sea" - geographically the Mediterranean Sea; symbolically the nations in turmoil—the Gentile world portrayed as a restless sea.

    • Psalm 65:5-7 "5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, 6 who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, 7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations."

    • Isaiah 17:12 "Woe to the many nations that rage—they rage like the raging sea! Woe to the peoples who roar—they roar like the roaring of great waters!"

    • Isaiah 57:20 "But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud."

    • Isaiah 60:5 "Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come."

    • Ezekiel 26:3 "... therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea casting up its waves."

  • "And I saw a beast"

    • "saw" in Greek is "eidon" meaning“I saw” / “I looked” (to perceive with the eyes; to see). It is John’s repeated vision formula in Revelation—he is reporting what the Spirit shows him.  Many understand the restrainer as the Spirit’s restraining influence being lifted (not the Spirit’s absence from the world), allowing the lawless one to be revealed at the appointed time.

      • Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction."

      • 2 Thessalonians 2:6-8 "6 And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming."

      • John 16:7-11 "7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate [Holy Spirit] will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. (supports the idea that without the Holy Spirit, lawlessness would follow and the Holy Spirit is referred to as "he" in John 15:26; 16:13-14)

      • Genesis 6:3 "Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

        • "not contend" supports that a period of grace or restraint can reach its end then judgment will come.

    • "a beast" = the Anti-Christ or False Messiah; Satan is a counterfeiter. He takes what God creates and in his lack of originality, distorts it.  He has done this with the Holy Trinity (God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) by mimicking it with his Anti-Trinity of Satan, the Anti-Christ and the False Prophet.

    • ten horns / seven heads = same as the Red Dragon infers his powers / influence come from Satan.

    • ten diadems (not crowns) on his horns = Greek diadēmata means royal rule (cf. Revelation 12:3; 19:12), not merely a victor’s wreath (stephanos, cf. Revelation 6:2); each ruler will be under the Anti-Christ's influence and authority.

    • each head a blasphemous name = Each head bears a blasphemous name—anticipating the Beast’s program of counterfeit allegiance that later culminates in the mark (Revelation 13:16–17). Before Revelation introduces the “mark,” it introduces the Beast’s “name”—because the conflict is allegiance and worship before it is commerce.

      • Daniel 7:25 "He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time."

Verse 2

  • resembled leopard, feet of bear, mouth of lion: There is a literal fulfillment and a future apocalyptic fulfillment.

    • Daniel 7:1-8 "2 Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. 3 Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea. 4 “The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it. 5 “And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh!’ 6 “After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule. 7 “After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being and a mouth that spoke boastfully."

      • "the great sea":  Mediterranean Sea, but also an allusion to the Gentile nations

      • "Four great beasts":  Reference to Daniel 2:31-43

        • 1st beast = lion with eagle wings with human mind is Babylon.  The "lamassu" is a lion body with eagle wings and a man's head.

        • 2nd beast = bear raised on one side with 3 ribs in teeth is Medo-Persian. The three ribs are conquered kingdoms.  The bear is a solitary and slow, but fierce animal.

          • Cyrus I conquered the Assyrian Kingdom

          • Cyrus the Great conquered the Babylonian Kingdom

          • Cyrus the Great subjugated its co-rulers, the Medes, after a coup attempt

        • 3rd beast = four-headed leopard with bird wings is Greek Empire conquered by Macedonians. The leopard body represents Alexander the Great and the speed of his conquests. The four heads are military leaders that divided his empire after death:

          • Cassander

          • Lysimachus

          • Ptolemy I [Soter]

          • Seleucus I Nicator

        • 4th beast = terrible, frightening and very powerful with large iron teeth to crush and trample. This describes the Roman armies.

        • "ten horns" = Pre-millennialists believe this is symbolic of a future confederation as they have not yet received a kingdom. Amillennialists believe these are the 1st ten emperors of Rome that culminated in the total destruction of Jerusalem.

          • Julius (technically not emperor)

          • Augustus

          • Tiberius

          • Claudius

          • Caligula

          • Nero

          • Galba

          • Otho

          • Vitellius

          • Vespasian = General Titus conquered Judea and razed Jerusalem in 70 AD

      • "another little horn" = the final Anti-Christ rising out of the remnants of the old Roman Empire or possibly from another form of republic.

      • "growing and uprooting three of the horns" = he will start small and grow in power, perhaps overthrowing three in his rise.

      • "eyes and mouth" = human being

      • Satan is the source of the Anti-Christ's power, throne and authority

    • THE ROMAN CONNECTION (Daniel 7 + Daniel 9)

      • Daniel links the final persecuting ruler to the fourth kingdom—the empire that follows Greece and is commonly identified as Rome. In Daniel 7, the “little horn” arises from this fourth kingdom. Daniel 9:26 adds that “the people of the ruler who will come” will destroy the city and the sanctuary—fulfilled historically when Rome destroyed Jerusalem and the Second Temple in AD 70.
This does not require a simplistic revival of ancient Rome, but it does suggest continuity with that fourth imperial domain—a final ruler emerging from the same civilizational stream that once crushed Jerusalem.

ORIGIN OF THE ANTI-CHRIST

FALSE RESURRECTION

Verse 3 - "One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast."

  • "seem to have a fatal wound" - He received a wound from a conflict that should have killed him.  It is unknown if this wound was received from a rebellion against the existing governmental entities to take over global control or an internal power struggle between the ten horns (kings).

    • Daniel 7:8, 20, 23-24 "“While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it... 20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully... 23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings."

    • 2 Thessalonians 2:3 "... for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed..."

    • Revelation 13:14 "... It [the False Prophet] ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast [Anti-Christ] who was wounded by the sword and yet lived."

WORSHIP OF THE FALSE GOD

Verse 4 - "People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?"

  • "People worshiped the dragon" - Satan’s greatest desire is to be worshiped as God

    • Matthew 4:8-10 "8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

Verse 8 - "All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.

  • "worship the beast"

    • 2 Thessalonians 2:4, 9-12 "4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God ... 9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness."

BLASPHEMY OF THE TRUE GOD

Verse 5-6 - "The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven."

  • "exercise its authority" - in the form of religion (worship), politics (government and treaties) and economics (commerce)

    • Daniel 7:8 "...This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being and a mouth that spoke boastfully."

    • Daniel 7:25 "He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. "

    • Daniel 11:36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods."

EXERCISE OF POWER

Verse 7 - "It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation."

  • "God's holy people" - In this framework, the woman of Revelation 12 is protected in the wilderness (Rev 12:6, 14), while other believers during this period endure persecution. Thus these “holy people” may refer to tribulation saints who are not within that protected remnant.

    • Revelation 12:6, 14 "6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days... 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach."

CALL FOR ENDURANCE AND PATIENCE

Verse 9-10 - "9 Whoever has ears, let them hear. 10 “If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword they will be killed.” This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people."

  • The Holy Spirit is not taken out of the world as there are also tribulation saints and how can the saints be marked for salvation without the Holy Spirit as their mark

    • Ezekiel 9:4-6 " 4 and said to him, “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it.” 5 As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion. 6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple."

    • Joel 2:32 "And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls."

    • John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

    • 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 "21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."

    • 2 Corinthians 5:5 "Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."

    • Ephesians 1:13-14 "13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory."

    • Ephesians 4:30 "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

    • 2 Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

    • Revelation 7:3 "“Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.”

  • Those who come to faith in Jesus Christ during this period will endure intense persecution and must remain faithful unto death.

    • Jeremiah 15:1-2 "Then the Lord said to me: “Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people. Send them away from my presence! Let them go! 2 And if they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “‘Those destined for death, to death; those for the sword, to the sword; those for starvation, to starvation; those for captivity, to captivity.’

    • Daniel 7:25 "25 He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time."

In The Dwelling of the Name, we learned that where the Name dwells, God dwells. Worship reveals whose Name we bear—and whose authority we acknowledge.

  • Revelation 13 becomes the inverse—revealing a counterfeit indwelling system:

    • The Beast receives worship.

    • The dragon gives authority.

    • Names are written (blasphemous names vs. Lamb’s book of life).

    • Marks are placed on foreheads.

Revelation 13 is not merely about a political tyrant, but about a counterfeit indwelling system—where worship, name, authority, and identity are redirected from God to the Beast.
